Outdoor Kitchens

With Spring fast approaching, (wishful thinking), it might be time to think about a new concept that is emerging. I recently ran across an article in the January 2008 issue of Kitchen & Bath Design News magazine discussing the increased populartiy of outdoor kitchens.

Granite countertops were mentioned as a very durable, practical surface to use, as it is more resistant to the outdoor elements. Since granite is a natural product, you do not need to be concerned with the possibility of surface fading in the sun, which is a concern with engineered quartz products.

Granite also comes in a wide variety of color options, and the ease of clean-up and maintenance make it a perfect choice for any outdoor surface. With so many of us deciding to entertain at home with close family and friends, the outdoor kitchen is a very appealing addition to any home.

Feel free to share…

Just at the indoor kitchen is a magnet for guests at any party, your outdoor kitchen in general, and our pizza oven in specific, are going to become the focal point for your entire property. On a summer evening, everyone will be attracted to the fire and smells coming from your pizza oven. Someone once explained to me that fire excites our basic instinct for eating — and you will find you pizza oven rivaling even the best view for the center of attention. In the winter and cool evenings, your pizza oven and outdoor fireplace provide warmth and a feeling a well-being. I have heard the pizza oven described to be the cool wealth equivalent of a swimming pool. What all of this means is that you have to plan on having lots of guests in your outdoor kitchen. Plan for where you want them when you are cooking, where they can sit and watch, where they make their own pizza, and where they can just hang out and enjoy the space.

What pizza oven are you talking about Adam?
I agree a outdoor kitchen can be a nieghbor magnet - although I would prefer cooking brats and burgers rather than pizza.

    Outdoor Kitchens!
Why run back and forth to the house when you can move everything you need outside?
Few summer pleasures are as much fun as a cookout. The smell of grilling food is mouth-watering, everything tastes great and it’s hard not to have a good time - that is, unless you’re the harried host running back and forth between the grill and the kitchen for the chicken and steak, forks and knives, beer and wine, and ketchup and mustard. And when everybody’s done, all the leftovers must be lugged back inside.

An outdoor kitchen can help you slow down and spend more time with family and friends by putting all the ingredients for outdoor dining close at hand. It can be as simple as a storage cabinet for cooking gear or as ambitious as a full kitchen with grill, refrigerator, sink and eating area. Either way, your yard will gain an outside “room” that’s a natural gathering spot.

Angie, I completely understand where you are coming from..the outdoors is the latest trend in casual living and entertaining. And Outdoor Kitchens, grills, islands and cabinets make outdoor living easy in the great Northwest.

We have to remember that using only the highest quality materials and construction methods, outdoor kitchens deliver a complete, all-season outdoor cooking environment that is naturally durable, functional and beautiful. It’s all you need to transform your backyard into a year-round living space for food, family and fun.

    Your comments are amazing!

My partner and I agree that oooking on the grill is a great way to entertain company or just feed the family without heating up the kitchen. But scurrying back and forth from the kitchen to the patio can get old. Make grilling easier and more pleasant is by putting together an outdoor kitchen. Even the simplest of setups can make outdoor cooking more efficient, and the fanciest ones mean you will not have to go back inside until bedtime.

I have suscribed to your blog since almost day 1 but never commented until today. Outdoor kitchens are nothing new. People in the Mediterranean have used them for more than a thousand years. Today everyone is catching on to the benefits of cooking outdoors. Many people’s dream homes now include outdoor kitchens. This growing trend in cooking and entertaining is taking over patios all around the world! I wish people would give credit where credit is do.

    Sincerely, Janine
