It’s a Small World…

I happened to be doing some research for my upcoming trip to Washington, D.C. in May the other day to put together a list of sites we would like to visit. While I have been there numerous times (I love it there!), others that are traveling with me have not. As I was searching online, I came across some information on one of the few monuments I have not visited, including the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in West Potomac Park.

While brainstorming on what to write my blog about, I decided that I wanted to do some research on the granite quarries operated by Cold Spring Granite Company. I came across an article, Continuing to build a successful quarrying operation, in Stone World magazine online. Low and behold, I began to read about all of the prestigious projects nationwide that use Cold Spring quarried granite, such as Carnelian, which is quarried in Milbank, SD. It turns out that 6,000 tons of Carnelian granite quarried from that very location were used in the FDR memorial.

Many of our national monuments and historical architectural buildings are constructed of granite for its durability and natural beauty. I have to admit, I may look at the beautiful city of Washington D.C. though different eyes this time around. I hope that I am able to share some of the sites with you on one of my upcoming blogs.

Feel free to share…

Angie

    Hello Angie,
your blog made me do some research I would like to share. The Vietnam Veterens Memorial Wall is made of from black granite from Bangalore, India, one of only three places in the world (the other countries are Sweden and South Africa) that you could get this amount of black granite in large sizes. The granite is extremely hard and has a very fine grain, so the names carved into The Wall should remain for hundreds of years. The black surface gives a feeling of death and sadness, but is polished to a high finish, so The Wall becomes a “living” memorial by reflecting the sky, the environment, and visitors. The Wall absorbs sunlight during the day and radiates that energy as heat during the evening and night. Here is a link for more information http://thewall-usa.com/

    Thanks

    A

    Hi Aaron,

Thanks for your comments. The Vietnam Veterens Memorial Wall is a very moving and touching place. I have been there several times and each time I walk away feeling a strong sense of sadness but also pride.

    Hello Bloggers!

Angie, I’ve enjoyed your blogs since you started months ago. I understand from your blog that you will be visiting DC soon. What an unbelievable location to vacation with friends and family.
After reading Mr. Notsovorros’s response it had me wanting to share my experties on the FDR memorial. Did you know that the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial is located along the famous cherry tree walk on the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park? The memorial is a landscape of four outdoor rooms with granite walls, statuary, inscriptions, waterfalls and thousands of plants, shrubs and trees representing FDR’s four terms in office as President of the United States from 1933-1945. Park rangers are available from 8 a.m. to midnight every day (except Christmas Day - of course). The best thing about the memorial is admission is Free!

I hope you enjoy my research! I typically visit DC 2-3 times a year. I have family just minutes from the Memorial. GOD BLESS THE USA!

Hello Angie, DC is such a beautiful area in May. My partner and I returned from DC in February and I’ve told her again and again that we need to return during May or June. If you have time, try to go to the Maryland suburbs of Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties offering a multitude of attractions (as well as nearby Baltimore and Annapolis).

    Thanks, Orapone

    Orapone,

Thank you for you suggestions. I am hoping that we can visit those areas as well. We will have to make wise use of our time!

Hi Angei, I’m Orapone’s partner. You are going to have an absolute blast in DC. I’m so excited for you and your guests. I wasn’t sure if you have a hotel selected so if not; located in the heart of downtown, the L’Enfant Plaza Hotel is amazing. ENJOY DC!
