Feast or Famine?

While all businesses experience both busy times and slow times, it is funny that it is human nature to complain in either circumstance. When times are slow, we often complain that there is not enough work. When we are crazy-busy, we often get stressed and then complain that we are too busy. In a perfect world however, many people would opt for a steady flow of work, where the effort would be easily manageable.

I recently read the article, “Stressed Out,” found in the May 2008 issue of Natural Health magazine that talked about the benefits of slowing down and time management that I found interesting. Let’s face it, we all could benefit from slowing down, being in the moment, and doing something we enjoy. It naturally takes our minds off of our stresses from work, in both busy and slow times.

Following are some ideas from the article that may help you de-stress:

  1. Become a Gardener:  Caring for plants, especially flowers may help you relax and may actually have some health benefits. Research shows that exposure to plants may lower blood pressure, increase productivity, and help speed recovery from illnesses.
  2. Practice Slow Yoga: Yoga creates more awareness between mind and body. It also helps to create a sense of stillness and lower stress.
  3. Take A Nap: Taking a nap can lead to improved memory and boosts serotonin levels.
  4. Start A Slow Hobby: Try taking up a hobby such as painting, quilting, wood carving, knitting, etc. A slow hobby can help the mind to be in the moment and draw away from every day stress.
  5. Eat Slowly: Taking time to eat your food creates a relaxing response, which helps you better digest your food. To help you slow down, try focusing on your food and the variety of tastes and textures.
  6. Do One Thing At A Time: In today’s society, many of us are used to constantly multi-tasking. Give your brain a break, and put your focus on just one thing. You might find that you actually accomplish more, with fewer mistakes.
  7. Meditate: Meditation teaches you to focus and relieves you mind of chattering. It also has many health benefits.
