Boycott Those Plastic Bags!

I don’t know about you, but I never have liked those plastic bags you get at various grocery, or department stores. They are flimsy, and your groceries never stay in them properly. When asked, “Do you want paper or plastic?,” my response was always, “Paper!” Several months ago, however, I purchased several re-useable cloth bags, which I like much better. They hold way more items, and are environmentally friendly.

I don’t know if you are a fan of the plastic bag, but I wanted to pass along a link regarding them that I received the other week. It is very interesting and has some astonishing information in it. Hopefully after reading it, you will change your mind about plastic bags and either bring your own, or use the paper bag (if they even offer it)!

I too hate getting all of those plastic bags…I have used the recyclable cloth bags for about a year now & love. In case you still go places & get those plastic bags, I found that you can turn them all in at Cub foods…they have a bin right inside the front doors that you can turn in any plastic bags you have!!

Barb your idea of cloth bags vs. plastic bags is simply absurd. Let’s think about how consumers use old plastic bags. Just last night I used one to pick up my dog droppings during a walk around the neighborhood. I also used 6 to sort my cans, glass, cardboard, plastic for my recycling pickup this morning. One of the most discerning parts of using cloth bags for many consumers is the loss of having extra plastic bags to use. I think to convert people to cloth bags is a bad idea. These cloth bags need to be produced; time, energy, man-hours, etc. And, if not sanitary due to fruit spoilage (for example) they could cause diseases to spread. We need to provide consumers with another solution to this problem.

Thrifty for example uses Bio-Bags in all of their locations. Bio-Bags are a better solution than mass producing cloth bags.

I think before we tell people to stop using plastic bags we need to realize the issues and concerns with cloth bags. Wouldn’t Biobags be more environmentally friendly than cloth bags? Or, another example is Aldi stores. At Aldi you need to supply your own bags for packing and transporting. I’ve been studying this concept for 4-1/2 years now and I get extremely frustrated with individuals that spread Mass E-mails around similar to the one on your blog post. Jonathan

    Jonathan:

I really don’t think that my opinion is absurd. I don’t think other countries, etc. would be banning plastic bags if it were. There are also other ways to pick up dog droppings, etc. and other ways to sort things for recycling.

I really haven’t researched bio-bags versus cloth bags. I personally feel cloth bags are a good alternative and was just passing along a link that I found interesting.

    Thanks for your comments!

    Hi Barb

I agree with your opinion about plastic bags. We should all use large burlap sacks like the ones I use. they are a little bit itchy but get the job done while preserving our atmosphere. All it takes is one plastic bag to harm a Polar bear or endanger a Bald Eagle.

    thanks
