Spirit of the Season…

I have never been one to do the early morning “Black Friday” shopping extravaganza, and after hearing about some horrible tragedies this year related to “Black Friday,” it only reaffirms my reluctance to participate. A trampled to death Wal-Mart employee in New York, an 8-month pregnant woman in New York injured, and two dead in a Toys R Us shootout in California, and to top if all off, I heard that shoppers at the Wal-Mart were upset that they were closing the store after the tragedy took place…heart breaking and quite unbelievable!

I think sometimes we get so wrapped up in the latest and greatest game, gadget, or electronic that we forget what the holiday season is really all about. To me, the most important things about Christmas are celebrating the birth of Jesus, spending time with my family and friends, reflecting on the past year, and preparing for the New Year. That may sound a little cheesy, but the older I get the more I appreciate the little, simple things in life.

I hope that you all take a step back and reflect on what is most important to you this holiday season, and share it with those around you. Have a blessed holiday season!

Feel free to share…

Angie, I enjoyed your post. But, please be courteous for us individuals who share family traditions on “Black Friday”. This year we had 5 generations celebrating “Black Friday” shopping. They included: my great grandmother, my grandmother, my mother, my daughter and I. My great grandmother is contained to a wheel chair so we tend to miss the bonus buys or deep price cuts but still enjoy the tradition of shopping together every year. My grandmother uses a walker for stability so we tend to take our time. First, let me say that I feel terrible for the individuals who lost their lives for a flat screen TV, cricket, furbies, Elmo Live, etc. I cannot fathom the idea of trampling a store employee for any item or great deal. Honestly, it makes me sick to my stomach. I know that my story will not compare to any stories you shared on your blog but let me tell you about our “Black Friday” experience. Most of us live in the south metro except for my great grand mother that refuses to move from Spring Lake Park where she lived for the last 90+ years of her life. Every year we start at Perkins and enjoy coffee and a roll before visiting Target. While driving to the mall we hit a deer and smashed up my van. Luckily, nobody was hurt and great grandma was secured to the floor in her wheel chair. After hitting the deer we thought “This is a heck of a way to start the day.” We had our vehicle towed to a metro dealership to be fixed and they offered a cargo van for us ladies to continue shopping on Friday. Which we did! After a couple hours of shopping we returned the van to the dealership. While pulling into the car dealer we rear ended a car in front of me. At least it was minor damage but still will require another deductible. Two deductibles in 1day! I look at it like this; my daughter wanted an ipod touch for Christmas. $500.00 deductible + $500 deductible + $229.99 ipod touch = priceless (Spending time with family on Black Friday). The real meaning of Christmas!

    Thank you, Tonya
