Top 10 Health Hoaxes in 2008 include Radioactive Granite Countertops
By now, many consumers are aware of the scare that went around last year about radioactive granite countertops. While the scare did cause some commotion and confusion, it turns out that story was actually a hoax. In fact, according to the article, Radioactive Granite In Countertops Named One of the Top 10 Health Story Hoaxes of 2008, published in the February 2008 issue of The Cutting Edge newsletter published by the MIA, “That story’s one of 10 health stories from 2008 identified as ‘hoaxes’ by the American Council of Science and Health, a nonprofit group of scientists and physicians that advocates a common-sense approach to maintaining good health.”
The ACSH maintains that any claims regarding health and products must be supported with sound science, and preferrably be found in published peer-reviewed journals. The bottom line is that you can’t believe everything that you hear. According to Gilbert Ross, ACSH’s medical/executive, “unfortunately, a lot of health claims are based on ideology, or agenda and are just trying to to scare people.”
