Is Granite Synonymous to Countertops Like Kleenex Is To Tissue?
Well let’s ponder that question…
Yesterday, I came across a blog titled Already Over: Your Granite Kitchen Countertops, which mentioned that granite has taken on the Kleenex brand. While I agree with this statement, I certainly do not agree that people do not want granite! I mean really, if people didn’t want granite countertops, we’d probably be out of business, and so would a lot of other fabricators out there. Granite is one of the most popular choices for countertops because of its strength, durability, and beauty. Granite is also low maintenance and comes in literally hundreds of color choices. It is no wonder that granite has become King over the last decade, or so.
While I agree that granite is not the perfect choice for everyone, it does play a role in the selection of other material options. Many other countertop choices are are made to look like granite, and also compare their qualities to granite. There are also quite a number of other natural stone options that can have a “granitesque” appearance, meaning-a similar look, but an altogether different mineral composition, possibly making them more susceptible to staining and scratching. So what countertop material is best for you? Well that depends on what you are looking for and is what important to you.
Following are a few guideline questions we ask to help determine countertop selections:
- What look are you trying to achieve?
- What room are you putting countertops in?
- Do you like a consistent look, or prefer something that has some variety, with flow and movement?
- If you like a consistent look, will it bother you if there is a mark, or vein here, or there?
- Is low maintenance important to you?
- Will you be using your countertop for cooking?
- Do you clean up spills promptly?
- Would you like to be able to cut on your countertops?
- Would you like to avoid using trivets?
- What are you willing to spend?
- etc.
