Granite Countertops And Overhang Questions…

One question we get asked frequently in our showroom is, “how much of an overhang can I have for my granite island?” While a 12″ overhang is probably the most common, as it fits a stool comfortably in place, there is no standard size, per se. For overhangs larger than 12″, we typically recommend some sort of additional support, such as corbels, posts, etc. We also sell and can install a support bracket, which is mounted on the under side of the granite, so it is not visible in plain sight. These brackets are very popular and are used when consumers are not interested in adding other types of support systems.

Keep in mind that there may be some limitations on overhang sizes depending on the size of the room, the cabinets selected, etc. As far as front overhangs to perimeter cabinets, we typically will add an 1-1/2″ overhang to the front of any countertop surface, and will add 1″ to any exposed open ends.

Granite Countertops And Support For Overhangs…

In our showroom, we often get asked the question, “Will I need additional support for my island if I want to extend the overhang?” This is a good question, and the answer can vary depending on the stone, the desired amount of overhang, design, etc.  Most cabinets can typically support granite countertops and weight is not an issue, but when the countertop extends to a certain point beyond the cabinet, sometimes an additional support may be required.

At PGC, we typically do not recommend any additional support for overhangs up to 12″ in size.  12″ overhangs are very common and usually provide ample room for seating.  For overhangs more than 12″ however, we do require additional support. We typically offer an invisible support bracket, which we sell and would install.

Other support options include corbels, posts, etc. Some consumers choose larger overhangs to provide additional space for chairs, or stools, morel leg room, aesthetic reasons, etc.

If you have questions pertaining to overhangs, please make sure you ask our customer service staff, or measuring technician. We are always happy to answer your questions.

We’ve Got Support Brackets For Your Overhangs…

Many customers are interested in overhangs for their islands, etc., but are not always sure if there will be enough support provided by their cabinets. We often hear, “How much of an overhang can my island have?”  While there is no standard answer to that question, we do not recommend an overhang larger than 12″ without some sort of additional support, in most circumstances. At PGC, we  recommend an invisible support bracket be used, which we sell and would install.
