Soapstone
Soapstone is a metamorphic rock, rich in magnesium and iron and has been used for centuries throughout the world. It is quite popular for MN soapstone countertops and sinks. It is also popular for MN fireplaces because of its ability to distribute heat evenly. Soapstone is often appealing to those people looking for a rustic, aged, or weathered look. Soapstone tends to be light gray in appearance and takes on a darker appearance with aging, as it goes through an oxidation process.
Soapstone basically comes in two varieties: Original, (dark green), and Ice Flower, (dark gray). Both varieties take on a darker appearance with aging and sealing, since they go through an oxidation process.
Soapstone Maintenance and Care
Sealing with mineral oil is recommended every few weeks for your MN stone for the first year to enhance the oxidation process. Abrasive cleaners such as Ajax are not recommended for soapstone.
Paramount Granite Company will seal your MN soapstone countertops with mineral oil per quarry instructions before installation provided the project requires no seams or backsplash. If the project requires seams or backsplash (which require adhesives that do not stick to mineral oil), Paramount Granite Company will leave mineral oil on site for the customer to apply themselves after at least 12 hours from our completed installation.
